Original Keeper of the Bush Graves

Rob Savory
Founder

Eromanga resident Rob Savory is the head wrangler of a group of volunteers who call themselves the ‘Keepers of the Bush Graves’.

Rob is originally from South Australia but has spent many years in the great expanse of Far South West Queensland. He has been all over this beautiful country and its red dirt flows through his veins.

With an infectious passion and drive for project succession, it is becoming a reality with the assistance of the dedicated individuals involved.

The team search out, restore as much as practicable and create a permanent record of the countless graves dotted across the vast expanses of the Channel Country. Part of the project is to install plaques to mark the grave sites, know or unknown.

The idea behind the project is to restore the old graves, preserve the memory of those they commemorate and register each bush grave as it comes to light.

Since 2018, the community project has registered almost 200 graves, scattered across far South-West Queensland, that are not contained within a cemetery. The graves hold the remains of outback locals with stories often marked by tragedy, from infants gone too young to swagmen who died in mysterious circumstances.

Through community participation and non-local volunteer efforts, Rob’s passion is now his Legacy.
